This paper presents the design and development of a low cost three-dimensional laser imaging system for scanning suitable surfaces. A generic, low cost, off-the-shelf laser range finder is used to obtain the primary one dimensional distance measurement. The range finder’s laser beam is reflected by a twin-axis mirror assembly driven by stepper motors providing the system with two angular degrees of freedom, allowing 3-D measurements to be determined. A camera and image processing techniques are used to determine the measured 1-D range value from the generic range-finding device. A computer program then uses the obtained data to create a 3-D point cloud. An algorithm is then used to construct a 3-D wire frame mesh representing the scanned surface. The system has an angular resolution of 1.8° and the results obtained demonstrate the system to have an accuracy of approximately ± 2cm at a scanning distance of 1.0m.

In this paper, a biomimetic robot fish is designed. It has a biomimetic tail to simulate the carangiform tail, a barycenter-adjustor for descending/ascending motions, multiple sensors, and it may communicate with the outside by an information relay system on water. Combining the movements of the tail and the structure for descending and ascending, the robot fish can simulate the swimming of real fish in water and a biomimetic motion library is established. Finally, the prototype and experiments are given.

Reaction of CeCl3·7H2O with Na2(oda) (oda = O(CH2CO2)22— oxydiacetate) in a 2:3 ratio gives the neutral cerium(III) complex [Ce2(oda)3(H2O)3]·9H2O (1). Treatment of a 1:3 mixture of CeCl3·7H2O and H2oda in water with 4 molar equivalents of NaOH also gives 1 but, with a larger excess of NaOH, the tri-sodium salt Na3[Ce(oda)3]·9H2O (2) is isolated. Formation of a tri-ammonium analogue of 2 can be achieved by neutralisation of an aqueous solution of CeCl3·7H2O and H2(oda) in a 1:3 ratio by NH4OH, giving (NH4)3[Ce(oda)3]·7H2O (3). Use of the cerium(IV) reagent (NH4)2[Ce(NO3)6] with Na2(oda) results in reduction to cerium(III) under ambient conditions and isolation of 1. However, in the absence of light this reaction yields crystals of the novel cerium(IV) heterobimetallic [Ce(oda)3Na4(NO3)2] (4). Each of these complexes exhibit a 3-D network structure having a common nine-coordinate [Ce(oda)3]n— (n = 2 or 3) subunit, irrespective of the oxidation state of cerium. In 1, six [Ce(oda)3]3— anions are connected, through bridging bidentate carboxylates, to a second Ce3+ site further coordinated by three water molecules. In contrast, the ammonium salt 2, displays isolated [Ce(oda)3]3— anions, devoid of further carboxylate bonding, but enmeshed within a network of hydrogen-bonded NH4+ cations and water molecules. The remarkable structure of 4 consists of infinite 2-D sheets of [Na2(NO3)]+ pillared by [Ce(oda)3]2— units, the connectivity arising by multidentate nitrate and carboxylate bridging.

In this paper, 3-D finite element modeling and simulations are carried out to investigate the bending deformation of a single-walled carbon nanotube cantilever biosensor due to mass attached, and addition of a nano-scale particles to the beam tip resulting from the bioparticle detection. In addition, an algorithm for an electrostaticmechanical coupled system is developed. The computed results are in excellent agreement with the well known electrostatic equations that govern the deformation.

Herein, a uniform three-dimensional (3-D) graphene nanodots-encaged porous gold electrode was prepared via ion beam sputtering deposition (IBSD) and mild corrosion chemistry for efficient enzyme electrode fabrication. Enzymes, like glucose oxidase and catalase, were modified with pyrene functionalities and then loaded into the graphene nanodots encaged porous gold electrode via non-covalent π-π stacking interaction between pyrene and graphene. The fabricated enzyme electrodes showed profound reusability and repeatability, high sensitivity, inherent selectivity and enhanced detection range. As for glucose analysis a broad linear range from 0.05 to 100 mM was obtained and the linear range for hydrogen peroxide was 0.005 to 4 mM. Detection limits of 30 μM for glucose and 1 μM for hydrogen peroxide were achieved (S/N = 3), respectively. These electrodes can be applied to analyze the clinical samples with reliable results. The formation mechanism and 3-D structure of the porous electrode were investigated using high resolution transmission electron microscope (HRTEM), atomic force microscopy (AFM), scanning electron microscope (SEM) and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS). Most importantly, various other ideal biosensors can be fabricated using the same porous electrode and the same enzyme modification methodology.

The nanoporous structure of membrane varies in 3-dimensional (3-D) space and has remarkable influences on the filtration or desalination achieved, fouling potentials and therefore, the quality of yielded water. Knowledge of the 3-D nanoporous structure is thus vital to understanding and predicting its performance. A novel method by incorporating transmission electronic microtomography, image processing and 3-D reconstruction is introduced to characterize membranes with nano structures. The reconstruction algorithm allows for the visualization of 3-D nanoporous structure in a non-destructive way from any directions. This novel technique Ieads to in-depth understanding and accurate prediction of filtration performance.

Apart from its classical function in bone and calcium metabolism, vitamin D is also involved in immune regulation and has been linked to various cancers, immune disorders and allergic diseases. Within the innate and adaptive immune systems, the vitamin D receptor and enzymes in monocytes, dendritic cells, epithelial cells, T lymphocytes and B lymphocytes mediate the immune modulatory actions of vitamin D. Vitamin D insufficiency/deficiency early in life has been identified as one of the risk factors for food allergy. Several studies have observed an association between increasing latitude and food allergy prevalence, plausibly linked to lower ultraviolet radiation (UVR) exposure and vitamin D synthesis in the skin. Along with mounting epidemiological evidence of a link between vitamin D status and food allergy, mice and human studies have shed light on the modulatory properties of vitamin D on the innate and adaptive immune systems. This review will summarize the literature on the metabolism and immune modulatory properties of vitamin D, with particular reference to food allergy.

The microenvironment plays a key role in the cellular differentiation of the two main cell lineages of the human breast, luminal epithelial, and myoepithelial. It is not clear, however, how the components of the microenvironment control the development of these cell lineages. To investigate how lineage development is regulated by 3-D culture and microenvironment components, we used the PMC42-LA human breast carcinoma cell line, which possesses stem cell characteristics. When cultured on a two-dimensional glass substrate, PMC42-LA cells formed a monolayer and expressed predominantly luminal epithelial markers, including cytokeratins 8, 18, and 19; E-cadherin; and sialomucin. The key myoepithelial-specific proteins alpha-smooth muscle actin and cytokeratin 14 were not expressed. When cultured within Engelbreth-Holm- Swarm sarcoma-derived basement membrane matrix (EHS matrix), PMC42-LA cells formed organoids in which the expression of luminal markers was reduced and the expression of other myoepithelial-specific markers (cytokeratin 17 and P-cadherin) was promoted. The presence of primary human mammary gland fibroblasts within the EHS matrix induced expression of the key myoepithelial-specific markers, alpha-smooth muscle actin and cytokeratin 14. Immortalized human skin fibroblasts were less effective in inducing expression of these key myoepithelial-specific markers. Confocal dual-labeling showed that individual cells expressed luminal or myoepithelial proteins, but not both. Conditioned medium from the mammary fibroblasts was equally effective in inducing myoepithelial marker expression. The results indicate that the myoepithelial lineage is promoted by the extracellular matrix, in conjunction with products secreted by breast-specific fibroblasts. Our results demonstrate a key role for the breast microenvironment in the regulation of breast lineage development.

Some aspects of numerical simulation of Lamb wave propagation in composite laminates using the finite element models with explicit dynamic analysis are addressed in this study. To correctly and efficiently describe the guided-wave excited/received by piezoelectric actuators/sensors, effective models of surface-bounded flat PZT disks based on effective force, moment and displacement are developed. Different finite element models for Lamb wave excitation, collection and propagation in isotropic plate and quasi-isotropic laminated composite are evaluated using continuum elements (3-D solid element) and structural elements (3-D shell element), to elaborate the validity and versatility of the proposed actuator/sensor models.

The aim of this paper is to improve the understanding of deformation of micro medical needle and thread during assembly and then to develop an economical and flexible deformation method. Therefore, the swaging process is computationally simulated with the finite element method in this paper. A commercially available explicit nonlinear finite element analysis code, LS-Dyna, is used to model the 3-D deformation and contact problem. As the firmness of the assembly on the needle depends on the contact force and friction, the contact and the slide between the needle and thread are taken into account in the simulation. The general surface-to-surface contact algorithm (STS) is used to simulate the contact. The paper provides an insight into the deformation of the micro products.
